About Me

About Bill Ray

br-15mos

Bill Ray has been playing drums since the beginning. Finding his father's drums at 15 months old and discovering the power of 2 & 4, his purpose on this plane of existence was set in motion at the age of four, having seen the local drum guru perform a drum solo at his parents' photography studio in Jackson, MS.

In 1989 a move to California was inevitable and taking gigs of any musical style turned out to be a fertile training ground. In 2001 Ike Turner offered BR the gig and as he said many times "Billy Ray is the drummer of my soul". Bill played with Ike on up to the end of his life and played on his 2007 Grammy Award winning album "Risin' With The Blues". Bill also holds over 150 other album credits to his career in all styles of music from Rock to Jazz, Country, R&B, Funk, and Eclectic "experimental" styles.

Bill is currently enjoying residence in the beautiful Pacific Northwest; Seattle, WA.

Bill endorses Stone Custom Drum, Sabian Cymbals, Pro-Mark Drumsticks, Aquarian Drumheads, Kickport International, Sonall Percussion, Humes & Berg, Etymotic, Eccentric Systems, and Slug Percussion Products.

Here's some stuff for you to purchase. I played on all of the albums listed in most cases, all of the tracks. On The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash album I did four tracks. All the music is handled through Bandcamp (via the artist's own account) and the book and sticks through my Ecwid store; PayPal is the transaction engine and that's safe & secure. :D

If your ceiling fan blades are dirty and need cleaning all you gotta do is take a damp pillowcase and bunch it up , throw it over the blade so that it's as if you are bagging up the blade, then wipe it down so all the dust and lint goes into the pillowcase. Take the pillowcase straight to the laundry bin and you're done. :D

You've got great songs but the computer drums you've been writing to just aren't cutting it; You're ready for the next level - real drums with a skilled professional.

session drums

Remember that time is $$$ in the studio!

There are no scheduling conflicts. We lay down the tracks, bounce a mix over, and you give the "yay" or "nay". Really, it's that easy. We know technology!

So, when do we start?

The Way It Works

Ike Turner- Risin with the Blues

Get a groove on!

  1. Play your tracks with a metronome or drum machine. If there are rubato or freestyle sections where the time goes away don't worry about that, I will interpret it.
  2. Set up an account with Dropbox or YouSendIt. When you send the link to your tracks include two files- one version with your "scratch" drum track, as well as one without the drum track, preferably with a click track and 8 clicks leading into the tune.
  3. I will chart out the tune, play the track down and send you back a mix of the performance. If it's not right we'll recut it with your suggestions and ideas.
  4. Once everything is to your liking we will zip up the ProTools session files and send them over to you in whatever bitrate you prefer. 48 or 96 is the usual preferred size.
  5. Mix your album as you normally would, save tons of time and hassle by having the "foundation" created by true craftsmen of their art with decades of experience.

All Styles- Rock, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Country, Free Music, etc. Even brushes!

Please note we have a "Pay First" policy.

Sticks: Pro-Mark

I've been a Pro-Mark endorser since 1996 and have played them since I can remember. My father was a stickler for quality drumsticks and it rubbed off.

Accessories

I've been with Slug Percussion Products since 1995. Their Slug Beaters are the greatest, and durable too! I've had two of them now in service for years and they are still going strong.

I am currently playing Stone Custom Drum, a small custom drum company in Fort Wayne, Indiana fronted by Bernie Stone. He purchased the old Slingerland drum co. tools and presses and makes his own shells out of all kinds of hardwoods. I use Aquarian Drumheads exclusively.

My current setup consists of the following drums:

Drums

  • 16"x 20" Bass Drum
  • 7" x 10" Tom
  • 8" x 12" Tom
  • 12" x 14" Floor Tom
  • 14" x 16" Floor Tom
  • 6" x 14" Koa Snare Drum, but snares may vary

Heads: Aquarian

in 2001 I signed with Aquarian. They have helped me define my voice and have helped create a lot of great music.

  • Superkick II - Bass Drum
  • Response2 - Toms
  • Texture Coated Reverse Dot - Snare

What good is a drumming website without a page devoted to drum solos? Well here it is.

Subcategories

Kind of a catch-all section of my site, this acts as the "lobby" area.

This is by no means a complete listing of all the things in my career; rather, some of the higher points and more fun bands that I can readily find video and content for.

I've played on a LOT of stuff over the years; so much that I've forgotten a lot of it! This section is an attempt to rekindle the memories of those special projects. I'll be adding things as they come to mind and as I see fit to feature them. And in the future I'm going to keep up with those things that I've completed.

In addition to drumming I also involve myself with some pretty cool peripheral activities.

I've always wanted to give credit where its due to those who help shape my way of playing, and even better...my way of living. I'm very fortunate to know most of the people listed.
